I am a transplanted native of Kansas, now
living in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I was born in (or near, as mother
used to say) Dodge City, Kansas. My parents, Gordon and Edith, and
my father's twin brother, Glen, lived on a farm near Kalvesta, Kansas.
At the time of my birth, my father and his brother were out in the
fields and my mother was transported to the hospital in Dodge City on
the milk wagon that came to pick up milk each morning. I came sooner
than expected, hence "near" Dodge City.
I
graduated from Great Bend Senior High School and attended Kansas State
University where I earned a BA and MA in Sociology. It was at
Kansas State where I met my best friend and life-long companion, Mary
Hottenstein. After teaching a semester at the University of
Wisconsin, Green Bay, I was drafted by my Kansas Draft Board to
save me from the Communists in Wisconsin during the Vietnam war. I
eventually entered the US Army and spent 18 months in Berlin Germany
where I also taught with the University of Maryland, European Division.
Returning from Berlin, I taught sociology at Kansas State until I
entered Purdue University's Ph.D. program in Sociology in the fall of
1980.
Upon graduating from Purdue, I taught Sociology at the University of
North Carolina at Charlotte and later Sociology and Criminal Justice at
Sacred Heart College. I have also worked for the Charlotte Housing
Authority, Chattanooga Housing Authority, and SPARTA Consulting
Corporation. I am currently employed by The United Way of Greater
Chattanooga as the Director of their Building Stable Lives Initiative
and the 2-1-1 Call Center. During much of this time I have been the President and CEO of Hayes-Hayes, PA, a consulting, research
and grant writing firm that I manage with my wife, Mary, and children,
Stephanie (Narberth, PA) and Mahlon (Davidson, NC).
I
have utilized photography in each of my endeavors, from illustrating the
conditions of poverty to improving the safety and security in high
crime neighborhoods to documenting various strategies and programs in
which I have been involved.
As I approach retirement I am
turning more and more of my time to fine art photography. My subjects of interest are often related
to the people I encounter on my travels and their surroundings.
However, I also enjoy the beauty of urban and rural environments and architecture. I am particularly
fond of the colors and drama of sunrises and sunsets, perhaps in memory
of my beginning and the approaching sunset of my life.
When I take a picture it is to offer the best
of what I see around me to others, I find that the pleasure expressed in
my photographs becomes long lasting.
