Renovating the Kansas Capitol -- Desktop Photographs
(Return to Bob's main page)

Renovating the Kansas Capitol Photographs  --  The Kansas Capitol building renovation started in the last days of December 2000.  At the very start of 2001 trees from the north side of the building were being cleared and preparations for the "big dig" could be well seen before the 2001 legislative session opened.

Click on each picture you would like to use as your computer's desktop background.  These five background photographs are free for your use on your computer.

If you enjoy these few photographs and would wish to have additional renovation photographs, please contact me by e-mail.  If there is a demand, I will compile a series of my Capitol renovation photographs.

Depending on the e-mail feedback from those who view these photographs, more Capitol renovation photographs may be added in the near future.

You should be able to "right-click" on the photo and select the "Use Image As Desktop Picture" option.

This photograph was taken in the fall of 2000.  The trees, central drive/parking and the top of Capitol without the new statue are clearly visible in this picture.  In other words, the beauty of the north side of the capitol has been lost for the last seven years!

By late January 2001, the north grounds were scrapped clean.  Digging away at the top layers of dirt had started and would continue several months.  Weather seemed to cooperate with the project.

Skipping ahead of many other "let's start digging" photographs, this April 2001 shows how the top levels of dirt had been removed and how the stone core drills were being brought in to sample the many feet of solid limestone.  Later stone chippers were used to break the layers of limestone in order to haul away stone rubble.

With the renovations, came the dome top statue.  From my collection of statue photographs, this is just one of the unique views of the statue that I have available.  The official name of the statue is Ad Astra.  The artist's name is Richard Bergen, a Salina, Kansas artist.  It took two attempts to install the statue.  The twenty foot high statue was installed on top of the capitol dome in October 2002.

Also in October of 2002 -- twenty-two months from the start of this project -- the first deliveries of the steel reinforcement rebar arrive.  In this picture there are three of the stone chippers working to break up the limestone bedrock.

November 21, 2003 -- that is about thirteen months after the first steel rebar was delivered -- the lower parking floor is nearly completed and work on the floor of the upper parking level is about half done.

December of 2003 rebar stock piles look like chaos, but the concrete steel workers prepare this material for the concrete walls, floors and ceilings of the underground parking garage.
