One may either click on a category below or scroll through the categories. Under each heading will be link that takes you to that subject matter gallery or brings you back to this menu.
AnimalsAnimals from our family pets to bears in the wild command our attention. The great bison can halt traffic on park roads just by their presence or just the thought of a bear off in the distance will cause people to stop and search for a sight of him or her. In his travels, John has had the opportunity to take photos of a variety of animals including belted or 'Oreo' cattle, curious elk and moose, skittish prairie dogs, deer and otters. Here's Looking At You Photo of a curious moose taken near a ranger station in the Grand Tetons.

BridgesBridges are of fascination for their architectural beauty various styles and shapes. Photos in this collection range from expansive bridges such as those found in Jacksonville, Florida or across the Rio Grande Canyon near Taos, New Mexico to the old covered bridges spanning creeks and streams in almost every state in America, but especially in the northeast,

The hot air balloon was one of the first types of flight that allowed us to break the bondage with the earth. Several of John's colleagues in Charlotte had their own balloons that they flew in rallies around North Carolina. During a trip to Arizona in 2013 they happened on the International Balloon Festival held in Albuquerque, New Mexico every October. Many of the pictures in this section were taken in the early morning hours at this festival. Up and Away. One of the photos in the gallery. This and others in the collection make beautiful canvas gallery-wrapped wall hanging with their vibrant colors and images. Up and Away is available in a 12" x 36" gallery-wrap for $200.00.

Cars, Trucks, Tractors and Farm EquipmentThe countryside is full of the rusting remnants of cars, trucks, tractors, buses, farm equipment and other reminders of our past. Once new and useful, these carcasses of yesterday still retain a beauty and fascination for us. They, by virtue of the patterns of rust, are works of art in and of themselves. John invites you to join him in this exploration of our past.

A recent study revealed that Chattanooga is the most "churched" city in the United States in terms of the number of churches per capita, the numbers of citizens who attend church at least once a week and the number who read the Bible weekly. It is the buckle of the Bible Belt and the headquarters of the "Silent Majority" during the 1960's. It is also home to River Bend, a week-long festival of music from gospel to punk. Betsy Smith made her start in Chattanooga at the Whole Note club on Martin Luther King. This Gallery welcomes you to Chattanooga. Old Stone Church Tower One of the earliest stone buildings in Chattanooga. It was built in 1882 at the corner of McCallie and Georgia Avenues. The sanctuary was demolished in 1977 with the stone from the sanctuary being worked into the parking area which occupies the site of the old sanctuary.

Rivers, Lakes and WaterscapesThe Tennessee River runs through Chattanooga giving character to the city and area. Flowing into the Tennessee River is the Ocoee which is one of premier white water rafting rivers in the county. Rivers and lakes and other inland bodies of water often define areas and make them places of destination. The photos here celebrate the beauty of our waterscapes. Tennessee River at Sunset

My Wife Tells Me People Make Pictures More Interesting While people make pictures more interesting as in the case below with the young dancers dreaming of dancing or the Flute Player, it is what they are doing that is of the most interest as well as how they are presented in the picture. Let's admit it, I am not a portrait or a wedding photographer unless you are looking for the unusual. Below is an example of what I mean. I hope that you will explore other pictures containing people by clicking on the link below to take you to the "People Page."
Dreaming of Dancing. Every little girl dreams of making the big stage some day. These two young girls are no different. They look at photos of dance classes sponsored by the Arts Council of Dayton, GA.

Pot Pori and Other Interesting Things
The world around us is filled with objects and images that add to our interest and enjoyment. They may even seem out of place or inconsistent with their environment. But often they have a beauty that transcends the immediate. The graffiti on the wall of a vacant building or on the side of a passing rail car both peaks interest and conveys a message, such as "NO TRUST PASSING" above. We are used to seeing "No Trespassing" but seldom a "No Trust Passing". But, it should cause us to wonder whether that isn't what we want from our leaders - "Don't violate our trust"?
Capturing these oddities and images that might otherwise go unnoticed is the purview of the photographer. Things such as the sign outside an antique shack in Maine advertising "Old Things" make us go "Hmmm". Or the sign outside Kate's Restaurant near Cape Cod advertising "Fried Seafood Ice Cream" or a store in western Illinois beckoning us to stop in for "Good Food / Fresh Bait". Each makes us stop to think a moment about the message being conveyed.
The photos in this section introduce us to a variety of images from signs of incongruence to things that stand out for their composition and patterns.

Amish Country The Amish and Mennonites emigrated to Pennsylvania from Switzerland in the early 18th century. While significant numbers of Amish families still live in Pennsylvania, particularly in the Berks and Lancaster counties, significant populations can be found in other states, especially Indiana around Topeka and Shipshewana. The rules of the church, the Ordnung, must be observed by every member and include prohibitions or limitations on the use of power-line electricity, telephones and automobiles. The Amish value rural life, manual labor and humility. The Amish seek to maintain a degree of separation from the non-Amish world and maintain a heavy emphasis on church and family relationships. They typically operate their own one-room school houses, discontinuing formal education after the eighth grade but undertake vocational training under the tutelage of parents and craftsmen within their community. The primary interaction between the Amish and non-Amish world occurs in the marketplace. Amish communities like Intercourse, PA and Shipshewana and Topeka, IN offer markets where the Amish sell food and goods from furniture to crafts.
Market Day. Market day in Topeka, IN. means the Amish families in the area come to town in their buggies to shop and socialize.

Below is one of the pictures that awaits you in the Buildings and Barns folder. John has attempted to document the changing nature of our built environment in the hope of capturing some of the fading parts of our past and the promises of our future, as in the case of the Adams Town Village. Adams Town Village. This colorful community of shops below and residences above is found next to the Black Angus Antique Mall in Adamstown, PA.
Back to TopFall ColorsFall brings out the colors of the leaves and countryside. Everyone tries to capture the colors of the fall but seldom do we do justice to the magical views lain out before our eyes. John has tried to do that in the pictures offered in this gallery and the Landscape gallery below. The Oswesatchie River is located in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The photo here was taken in early October, 2015.
FlowersWe all enjoy the beauty of flowers in bloom. This gallery presents some of John's better pictures of flowers that are still available for purchase. Some, such as the water lilies below, have only a few prints left. Two Water Lilies
Three Water Lilies
The term "landscape" covers a variety of subjects (or lack of specific subjects) that range from views of rolling hills, fog shrouded mountains, farms with and without crops to lonely, dusty roads. The Landscape Gallery contains examples of each of these and are presented for your enjoyment and contemplation. An Arizona ridge at sunset presented an interesting landscape shown in two different views below. One is closer view showing the shadow outlines of a fence and utility pole. The second is a panoramic view of the ridge showing the desolate loneliness of this part of Arizona. The second fiew is also available as a two-panel oil painting. The oil painting is offered for $600.00. (one only)

Churches and GraveyardsChurch at the Fork of the Brandywine. Locaated along Route 272 near New Holland, Pennsylvania, this church has always caught my eye for its solitude and composure. I have many views of this church if one is interested in different views.

From song birds to waterfowl to birds of prey, birds always fascinate us both with their beauty and Migration of the Ducks The following photos represent one of those rare chances to be in the right place at the right time. In this case, I was standing on a dock on the inner canal on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, hoping to catch the setting sun over Sunset Beach. A flock of ducks came down the canal headed south as I was setting up. As you can see, they made for an interesting sequence of serendipitous photographs. I am offering them either as a series or individually. I have sold one and three are on display at Sunset River Market Gallery in Calabash, NC.
To order either send an email to john@hayesgalleries.com with the number of the photo or photos you desire and the size of print desired if different than suggested above or simply click on the number under the photo desired to order the gallery print specified above.

From Coast to CoastAmerica's coast lines are dotted with fishing villages, exotic harbors, sandy beaches and rocky shores. Lighthouses warn boaters and sea goers of perils that await them along the shores. Boats of all sizes and shapes bob and dip on the waves of coastal waters. Some of these views are captured in these photos. Walkway to the Edge of the Bay. While visiting the coast of Maine, we happened upon Casco Bay near Yarmouth, Ne. The walkway stretched out into the bay and you can read the names of contributors to this walk into time. I am offering this as a gallery-wrap on canvas in a 24" x 30" format. Cost is $220.00. Order the print from the photographer John Hayes
